Hot Event Design Trends for 2015

Just as the end of the year begs for a look back at the best from the previous 12 months, January is the time to look forward to new and fresh ideas (and kick a few stale ones to the curb.)

Here’s my take on what’s IN and OUT for celebrating and entertaining in 2015

OUT:

Formal dinners, assigned seats, and one-size-fits-all affairs.

IN:

Choices & flexibility. In a world where everything can be customized to a person’s tastes, that last thing you want to do is not give people choices. Guests want to experience an event the way they want to experience it: who they sit with, the space they inhabit, the food and drink they consume.

So be sure to offer your guests a variety of seating options (both where they sit and with whom), options of vibe and environment (the cozy corner, the refreshing outdoor escape, the loungey hub next to the dance floor) and activities to ensure that everyone is comfortable and enjoys themselves.

OUT:

White Orchids. Don’t get me wrong: white orchids are a thing of beauty. But they’re no longer surprising. And intense, vibrant palettes like lime and orange don’t feel as fresh now.

IN:

More subdued, sophisticated base colors such as slate grey, olive green and midnight blue with accent colors of fuchsia or tangerine. I’m seeing a lot more of lamb’s ear and seeded eucalyptus used in floral arrangements. Similarly, gradual shifts in tone, such as an ombre effect, have edged out more dramatic, high contrast looks.

OUT:

The rustic, raw wood look. It’s just too common now.

IN:

Paper, paper, and more paper. From delicate flowers crafted in paper to décor elements to large-scale statement pieces and walls, paper is definitely the hot material for 2015!

OUT:

Tables draped in fabric.

IN:

Real, substantial furniture pieces. Guests appreciate a well-designed table much more than the standard linen-covered rental.

OUT:

Anything that doesn’t wrinkle. Just say no to synthetics!

IN:

Custom, luxurious linens in simple and bold patterns and graphics.
